ON KNOWING HOW TO LIVE
Standing on line at Smart and final,
the guy in front of me joked around
with a young cashier who couldn’t
stop giggling like a middle school girl.
He looked like a construction worker
who was having such a good time,
none of us minded being kept waiting.
We spontaneously gave him a round
of applause. He bowed, waving at us
as he left the store, pushing his cart
filled to the brim with Budweiser beer.
A reminder.
